Asylum Seeker and Refugee Clinic (ARC)

At the Asylum and Refugee Clinic (ARC), we provide essential mental health support for all children and young people who have arrived in the UK unaccompanied and are seeking asylum in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. We aim to strengthen children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing. To do this, we bring together all the adults around them to understand the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how to best support them. The support we offer helps children and young people understand and alleviate the distress they are experiencing. We also work with the carers and professionals in their network to have the best understanding of the impacts of PTSD.

Our services are available to children and young people up to the age of 18 years old in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, who are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and have been referred to us by their GP, school nurses or other professionals. We support children and young people who either: are in the UK with their family, or who have arrived in the UK unaccompanied, without a carer or family. We always see young people in person, mostly at ARC in Barton Hill, Bristol, or another community setting. Most of our work with foster carers and professionals is held online. What to expect when using our service: Our first step is to assess whether a young person is suitable for our service in a pre-referral consultation. After this assessment, we can offer the best therapy based on the young person’s needs. This could involve trauma-focused therapy, including eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), children’s accelerated trauma treatment (CATT) and art therapy. We also offer network support and consultation to carers and professionals.
