The Hope Service
The Hope service supports asylum seekers, refugees and victims of trafficking in two ways. We have a therapy pathways for people who have experienced trauma in adulthood (although may also have experienced childhood trauma) and have a primary diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The people we support have often experienced multiple traumas in their home country and on their journey to the UK. They may face other practical challenges, for example unstable housing, poverty and discrimination.
The care pathway within the service involves Moving On After Trauma (MOAT) groups and one-to-one specialist trauma-focused psychological therapy, alongside more general casework. The section below outlines our trauma treatment pathway:
Moving on After Trauma Group (MOAT): A 6 week group to help people understand how trauma affects them. We teach people skills to manage their symptoms and help them feel better. For example, to sleep better, to feel more relaxed and to have fewer flashbacks.
1:1 Trauma Therapy: After the MOAT group, people can have one-to-one therapy sessions with a therapist. We help people manage their difficulties and help process their trauma memories. We always use interpreters if people need them.
All our work is confidential and we work both in the community and in NHS buildings.
The second way in which we support people is though more community based support – this includes providing wellbeing initiatives, such as community groups to support people to improve sleep and art groups and we work across the IA hotels in the region offering advice and support to all residents. Community based support is delivered by our recovery coordinators, working with voluntary sector partners where possible. We are also working towards opening a Memorial Garden in the centre of Bristol to create a reflective space for the community more widely.
We work closely with Bristol Refugee Rights, SARI, Borderlands, Bristol Mind and Unseen to ensure our service users receive specialist support across their different needs.
We accept referrals from NHS Talking Therapies - North Somerset & South Gloucestershire and from other mental health teams within AWP and partner organisations. If you need advice or support to make a referral please email: awp.hopeserviceteam@nhs.net
