Privacy Notice & T&Cs

This notice explains how the Kompasi website handles your personal information while you are searching for providers and receiving signposting information from the service in return.

Who runs this website?

The Kompasi Platform (this website, or “the site”) is provided by The Developer Society on behalf of The Step Change Consortium, a partnership of asylum and refugee support organisations. Our contact details can be found at the bottom of this page.

Our privacy promise to you

We are committed to protecting and respecting your privacy. We only collect the minimum information necessary to provide the service to you, and this notice tells you what information we are collecting about you, how we use it and who we may share it with.

We follow best practices to protect your information from accidental or unlawful access, disclosure, loss, damage or destruction.

We will always give you control over your personal information. You can contact us and tell us to stop collecting, using or sharing your information at any time.

What information do we collect, how and why?

The types of personal data we collect are:

  • Session cookies. These are small files placed on your device to enable tracking of sessions and therefore ensure that the search result you request is yours and not someone else’s. We will ask for your specific consent when we want to use cookies to track your session on the site.
  • Search terms used. These are recorded so that we can analyse how people are using the site and make improvements in the future. We use the description of the services you are seeking to search for relevant services.
  • Technical details about the browser you are using, your IP address and other information needed to display web pages and return results. We use this to troubleshoot any problems people might have with the site.

We get this data directly from your web browser when you first connect to the site, and if you choose to accept cookies, and as it is entered directly into search input fields on the site.

How do we share this information?

We don’t share the information you provide in any form that will identify you, but we may share the information you provided with other organisations where:

  • Those organisations can provide you with additional support (at your request);
  • Required by law or in response to a court order or law enforcement request;
  • Those organisations are providing a service on behalf of the Step Change Consortium (such as IT or data management services).

Where your information is stored and how we keep it secure

We take our security responsibilities very seriously and have put in place measures to protect personal information from accidental or unlawful access, disclosure, loss, damage or destruction. For example:

  • We have procedures to identify, manage and report personal data security breaches, in the unlikely event of a breach occurring.
  • Where we use service providers, we carry out due diligence checks on those organisations and have contracts in place which require them to handle personal information in line with the UK data protection laws.

How long we keep information for

Information on your use of the site is held for a maximum of six months before being summarised into statistical form - this would not be able to be used to identify you personally. This data is kept in case of system failure and the need to restore the platform using a backup or similar recovery operation.

Following this period, only summary reports covering the usage of the platform are retained for monitoring and performance management purposes.

Your data protection rights

Under the UK data protection laws you have the right to:

  • be told how your personal information is being handled by the site;
  • receive a copy of your personal information held on the site or ask for someone else to;
  • ask us to rectify information you think is inaccurate;
  • ask us to complete information you think is incomplete;
  • ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances;
  • ask us to restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances;
  • object to us using your personal information.

We hope you will be happy with the way we handle your information, but if there are any problems, please contact us so we can put things right. You are not required to pay a fee and can expect to receive a response within one calendar month. If you are still not satisfied you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. Further information about this and your data protection rights can be found on the Information Commissioner’s Office website at www.ico.org.
