Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit (GMIAU) - Windrush
GMIAU provides support for the Windrush Generation, a group of people who arrived in the UK from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971. Their service helps individuals who face issues related to their immigration status, including those who may not have the right documents or who are struggling to obtain settled status.
GMIAU assists with legal advice, helping clients complete applications for citizenship or settled status. They also provide practical support, such as help with accessing healthcare and benefits. For example, if someone has been wrongly denied access to public services.
How to access:
1) Referral Form
Referrals can be made by a third party or by the individual themselves using the referral form on our website: https://gmiau.org/help-and-advice/services/#referrals
Please include as much detail as possible. Referrals are open Monday to Thursday. If eligible for legal aid, the person may be assigned a caseworker to support them with their immigration issue. If we can't take on the case, they'll receive an email with advice from a legal advisor to help them move forward independently.
2) Call Advice-line
Advice is given over the phone and not in writing. If a referral is needed, they may be asked to submit one or we may do it on their behalf, depending on their situation.
