Bristol City of Sanctuary

We are a dedicated charity with a huge vision that every person seeking sanctuary feels welcomed and safe and that their contribution to the community is valued. We raise awareness of what it means to seek sanctuary in Bristol, challenging misconceptions and celebrating the immense contributions that people seeking sanctuary make to our city. We advocate for a fair and humane asylum system, a system which protects rather than punishes. We work to embed welcome in Bristol’s businesses and institutions, running initiatives like our Schools of Sanctuary award.

Schools of Sanctuary

Last updated 05/12/24

Schools and Colleges of Sanctuary is an initiative of Bristol City of Sanctuary, which aims to: Promote positive attitudes within schools, colleges and their communities around people seeking sanctuary. Support schools and colleges to take positive steps and to be proud of being places of safety and inclusion for all. Recognise and celebrate schools and colleges that are committed to welcoming and supporting people seeking sanctuary. What is a School or College of Sanctuary? It is a school or college that is committed to being a safe and welcoming place for people whose lives were in danger in their own country. This means it is a school or college that helps its students, staff and wider community to understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary, and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community. It is an establishment that is proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for all.

Transport Fund

Last updated 05/12/24

Bristol City of Sanctuary manages the transport fund on behalf of the sector. Requests for bus tickets must be made through other organisations and not directly to Bristol City of Sanctuary. The Bristol City of Sanctuary Transport Fund is a community initiative to fund transport, such as bus or train tickets, for people seeking sanctuary in our city, who would otherwise not be able to access vital services and appointments. We are very grateful to First Bus who are match funding a generous proportion of your donations, and grateful to the various asylum seeker support organisations who distribute the tickets. Bristol Refugee Rights, Refugee Women of Bristol, Project MAMA, The Haven, Brigstowe and Trauma Foundation South West are all in receipt of Transport fund tickets which they distribute to their service users and members.
