Papyrus

PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people.

The work we do centres around five key pillars; Support, Equip, Influence, Sustain and Enable.

SUPPORT:

We offer professional advice and information to young people and those who are worried about them when suicide becomes part of their lived experience. We intervene to protect life where this is endangered. We do this every day of the year.

EQUIP:

Our people reach and engage with communities across the UK. We have strengthened our volunteering offer. Staff and volunteers reflect the diverse communities they engage with. They are geographically dispersed across the UK. They work with partners and local suicide prevention planning groups to aid joined-up thinking and action.

INFLUENCE:

We work with partners to shape and deliver effective suicide intervention initiatives in communities to meet the needs of young people who experience suicidal thoughts or behaviours, and those who are concerned about them. We lobby for policy change where these needs are not being met.

SUSTAIN:

We work hard to ensure we have a diverse income portfolio and have robust risk management and financial plans in place to ensure continuity and future growth within the charity.

ENABLE:

Our management structure enables good and timely decision-making and promotes subsidiarity. We invest in staff and volunteers so that they can be effective and productive. They are properly supported in delivering our mission to enable life for young people.

Positive Cycles

Positive Cycles started as a community-based project delivering affordable bikes to local people. Since starting, the project has grown, encouraging more people to recycle and take up cycling.

We take old bikes, clean them up and then our groups of volunteers and young people fix them, gaining AQA qualifications in the process. The newly-refurbished bikes are then donated to local families, used in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester or sold, with all profits being given back to the Positive Cycles project to buy equipment and parts.

The bike workshop is also used by our Youth Justice Service as part of the unpaid community work of young offenders.  The young people are involved in cleaning and fixing donated bikes and making sure they are ready to be resold.  In doing this they gain valuable experience and AQA qualifications.

Safety for Sisters

Safety4Sisters was established to address the exclusion of migrant women (particularly those with 'no recourse to public funds') from the most basic rights of safety and protection. We work toward this through our policy work - highlighting strategies and practices that exclude migrant women from protection within statutory and voluntary provision.

The core work of Safety4Sisters is the Migrant Women’s Support Group that gives voice to migrant women fleeing abuse. This is a space which attends to the dynamics of both gender based violence and immigration controls, and which connects individual experiences with wider women's struggles.

During the school holidays we run weekly trips with the women and children - most importantly these are fun, but we’re also working to ensure that migrant families are able to access public space. We work with organisations to ensure that they are inclusive and accessible to migrant women.
