Our free English conversation classes will help you to improve your confidence and ability to use English in everyday situations. We are very friendly and fairly informal. Lessons are suitable for complete beginners to intermediate level. We mainly focus on speaking and listening but also encourage reading and writing according to the student’s requirements. Sessions are led by qualified teachers with the support of other volunteers who draw from a range of resources, including ESOL Entry Level 1, English My Way and bespoke support.

"Web based gateway to access ESOL within Greater Manchester. Local authorities in Manchester, Salford, Rochdale, Bury, Trafford, Oldham and Tameside are working in partnership to help people join suitable ESOL courses in their local area. You will need to complete a short application. We will then contact you to arrange an assessment for an ESOL class in your local area. If you wish to join an ESOL class but you are not able to complete an online application, you will need to make an appointment to have an assessment in your local area. Watch the video which explains the assessment at an ESOL Advice session. We follow the same process in Manchester, Rochdale, Salford, Bury, Tameside, Oldham, Trafford and Stockport. You only need ONE assessment for any of the ESOL courses in these areas of Greater Manchester. A teacher will ask you a few questions about yourself, where and when you can study and may ask you to read and write a little if you can. This will help us decide which class is good for you. You will need 30 minutes to do the assessment. You can bring a friend or a family member with you for support if you wish. We don’t currently have an ESOL Hub in Bolton or Wigan. You can still have an assessment if you are happy to study online or outside your local area where we might be able to offer you a course. Site also has online modules you can study at home. It also has links ot organisations that can assist with digital inclusion."

How we work

Our ESOL courses are held at HTCCC, where we create an inclusive atmosphere for around 35-40 women each week. We also offer a free crèche to support mothers attending our programs.

Oldham Bethel Church

Last updated 19/05/24

"Wednesdays 10am-12pm If English is not your first language and you want to improve your English speaking, reading and writing skills our English Classes are the place for you. You may have tried getting onto a college course and been unable to meet the language requirements. Perhaps you want to improve your English whilst getting to know some other people. Maybe you simply wish to speak English more fluently to help in your everyday life. Whatever the reason, our classes are open to anyone who wants to improve their English speaking and listening skills as well as enhance their reading and writing abilities. We have no minimum language requirement and cater for a range of abilities. We run two classes simultaneously: a beginners and an intermediate class. All lessons are delivered by warm and friendly staff who are keen to help you learn. Classes run every Wednesday from 10am-12pm at Oldham Bethel Church. We usually begin with tea and coffee in order to get to know one another better. This means you learn English in a classroom setting as well as having the opportunity to put your speaking skills into practice by talking with native English-speakers. You can remain in our classes for as long as you feel it is helpful to your progress. Some of our students remain with us a long time while others join us more briefly before enrolling onto higher level college courses. However long you plan to learn with us, you are welcome. Community Food Bags: Turn up outside the church between 11-12 on a Saturday if you need help with a few items of food. No voucher required. Just turn up and pick up a bag or two of food donated by local supermarkets."

Rethink Rebuild Society

Last updated 19/05/24

"Rethink Rebuild Society (RR) is a Manchester-based charity that works towards improving the lives of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants, in particular but not exclusively Syrians in the UK, helping them become positively established within British society. RR has established an advice service that provides support with benefits, job searches, and immigration matters, thus working to improve the economic and social well-being of Syrians and refugees from other countries, helping them to become self-reliant in their new country. RR also endeavours to relieve or prevent poverty among refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants, in particular but not exclusively, Syrians. RR provides advice regarding education, housing and employment. Education and training are also provided in computer skills, entrepreneurship, and volunteering opportunities, mainly in English. Social Inclusion: RR promotes social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants from becoming socially excluded. RR provides education and training in English language and culture; promotes the arts culture and heritage of refugee communities; and provides recreational facilities that bring communities together and relieve isolation. Social Gatherings: RR also brings the Syrian community together during these difficult times in their mother country. RR organises social gatherings, in particular but not exclusively, for the Syrian community during Eid days and Christmas and Easter holidays, a time when many may feel particularly lonely or isolated, away from family and friends. . Monthly Seminars and Movie Screenings: As implied by our name Rethink Rebuild Society, we are heavily invested in stimulating debate and promoting discussion within our community. Our monthly seminars and movie screenings address issues pertaining to Syria or Syrians, or refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants from other countries, and allow for constructive discussion and debate.

The Broughton Trust

The Broughton Trust

Last updated 19/05/24

"The Broughton Trust provides services for refugees and asylum seekers across Salford. We provide a one to one assessment process to plan a bespoke learning and support programme for ESOL learners. The wide range of courses in their ESOL programme are non-accredited and delivered in a community setting to reduce anxiety and increase participation, creating pathways to employment and qualifications. Learning support workers work closely with each individual to identify skill gaps and other non-academic support needed. Information advice and guidance sessions are provided throughout the process and by working with outside organisations through a signposting/referral system. Employment Support: In partnership with a range of employers and training providers we provide a pathway into meaningful employment for the unqualified, unskilled and inexperienced, particularly in fields such as construction, hospitality and personal services. We offer a range of services from job clubs, pre-employment training and work sampling all underpinned by 1:1 support. We contact some of the most difficult to track and place young adults (the ‘invisible’) who are on no-one’s register, who claim no benefits and who live outside the system. Our successes have been recognised by contracts with a number of partners and in 2018 we placed over 60 adults into sustained (over 6 months) permanent full-time jobs."
