Positive Action in Housing - Room for Refugees
Room for Refugees is a discreet and confidential hosting network providing safe matching of refugees and asylum seekers with households across the UK.
The hosting process gives an invaluable opportunity for refugee support agencies to work on cases and stabilise clients so that they are able to re-access public funds or even resolve their case so that the right to live in the UK is granted to them.
We also work with social workers from local authorities seeking loving homes for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeker Children.
Our online system – REFER – lets caseworkers from refugee and migrant support organisations quickly find suitable hosts for their clients. For more information about this process, please view our website.
How to access:
Apply for an online caseworker account using the link at the bottom of the page - https://www.roomforrefugees.com/caseworker-account
Once the account is approved, usually within a day or so, read all the guidance and make your first referral. (For especially urgent vulnerable cases, email home@positiveactionh.org first to say you need an account quickly). We will then assess the referral and search for suitable hosts.

Positive Cycles - Oldham
We take old bikes, clean them up and then our volunteers and groups of young people fix them, gaining AQA qualifications in the process. The newly-refurbished bikes are then donated to local families, used in conjunction with the Transport for Greater Manchester or sold with all profits being churned directly back into the Positive Cycles project to buy better equipment and parts.
The workshop is also used by the Oldham Youth Justice Service as part of the unpaid community work of young offenders. The young people are involved in cleaning and fixing donated bikes and making sure they are roadworthy and ready to be resold. In doing this they gain valuable experience and qualifications. We also offer AQA-accredited Bike Maintenance courses to individuals and groups.

Pride Without Borders
Pride Without Borders is our support group for Bristol-based LGBTQ+ people seeking asylum and those with refugee status. We meet every 2 weeks and spend time together. We support and listen to each other and enjoy celebrating our identities and cultures together. We sometimes go to fun nights out and events.
We aim to connect with Bristol’s great LGBTQ+ community. The manager and our great team of volunteers can give you support and advice so you can stay safe and get what you need. This includes help understanding the asylum system, accessing housing and finance, supporting you if your housing is not safe or you are at risk of homelessness.
LGBTQ+ people aged 13 to 25 could join another group called Freedom Youth. You don’t have to be an asylum seeker or refugee.

Refugee Resettlement Service
Using Home Office funding, B&NES Council commission Julian House to resettle people with ‘refugee’ status through the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS). The scheme exists to enable the resettlement of those who have been identified by the United Nations as being the most vulnerable people fleeing persecution, violence, and life-threatening challenges in their countries of origin. We work mostly with families, many of whom have significant medical conditions and/or who have survived torture. The project supports and empowers families to rebuild their lives, move forwards from trauma, and live happily and independently in the UK. We work closely in partnership with local charity Bath Welcomes Refugees amongst other local, regional and national organisation.

RefuLingua enables people of refugee and migrant backgrounds to gain employment or work experience through teaching their native language. By providing basic language teacher training and ongoing support, RefuLingua offers our tutors the opportunity to develop new skills, meet new people and gain confidence in a new country.
At the same time, RefuLingua gives host communities the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the skills that people of refugee and migrant background bring to our city, through the eyes of being a student. Renew Stockport / Loaves and Fishes - Stockport
This project started in 2013 when Pioneer Minister Ed Leavy believed God was calling him to start a ministry for the homeless of Stockport.
After being told there were no homeless in Stockport by officials, Ed & his team set up a soup kitchen style operation in an empty car park in the middle of Stockport.
The first week 5 people turned up, the following week 50 & these numbers continued to grow until we were offered to set up our operation in several different locations eventually outgrowing all of them due to demand.
Services include:
• We distribute: Clothes, bedding, tents, sleeping bags & emergency food parcels when needed
• We provide: Advocacy and advice for refugees and asylum seekers in Stockport
• We help: We work with local statutory and voluntary organisations to help the homeless into accommodation
• We partner: We work with other charities to provide mental health support and skill building activities

Salford Food Parcels Project - Food Bank
We provide free food to anyone in food poverty. We do not operate a voucher system as we don’t see how that helps people struggling with food poverty for the longer term.
We work in collaboration with the Red Cross who provide destitute asylum seekers with a bus fare to attend the project. We also help anyone who is struggling with coping for a short period until they are able to manage again.
We provide basic food stuff and as much fresh food as we are able to obtain from other food providers, such as Fareshare and Fareshare Go (food from Tesco extra and express) or from our allotment.
We seek to help wherever we can and will always give at least one food parcel and then continue depending on the circumstances presented.
How to access:
Individuals can self-refer by contacting the service directly. Access the project via the car park entrance. Once a referral is made, clients receive a food parcel that contains essential items, such as canned goods, pasta, rice, and fresh produce.
You can also call us for help if necessary.

Salford LA Housing Options Point
The Salford Homelessness Service helps people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. They work with individuals and families in Salford, offering support to find safe and secure housing. The service is available to anyone facing homelessness, including those living in temporary accommodation or staying with friends.
The service provides various types of help. For example, they offer advice on housing options, assistance with applying for housing benefits, and support in accessing emergency accommodation. They can also help people create a personalised plan to improve their situation and maintain their tenancy.
To Access:
Referrals to the service can come from different sources, such as social services, local charities, or directly from individuals seeking help. The team works closely with various organisations to ensure people receive the right support, including mental health services and financial advice. Self-referral form: https://gm-ca.org/referral/FormPage.aspx
If you are homeless today, go to Salford Housing Options Point and ask for housing options advice. You can also go to Salford Loaves and Fishes on Paddington Close in Pendleton Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm.
Do I need to bring anything? You will need to take the following with you:
Proof of your ID such as a valid passport, a driving licence, a medical card, a letter from your GP Proof of your income or benefits Proof of your National Insurance number
What will I be asked at my housing options assessment?
You will be asked questions about your current housing situation. This is important as it will allow the team to provide you with tailored advice relevant to your circumstances. If you have nowhere to live, this will trigger a homelessness assessment, under the homelessness legislation.
What is temporary accommodation?
Customers who are assessed under the homelessness legislation as having a priority need, and have no accommodation available to them that evening, may be offered emergency accommodation. This could be a hostel or bed-and-breakfast accommodation.
When will I receive a decision?
Once we have completed your assessment, we will write to you with our decision. If we have accepted a duty to re-house you, we will allow access to Salford Home Search for help finding a new home.

Sanctuary Breaks
Hill House’s primary purpose is to enable people seeking sanctuary to have some time away from the city, and to enjoy a few hours or a few days in the countryside. We arrange regular day trips for Gloucestershire’s asylum seekers and refugees, and welcome people from further afield for shorter or longer visits. As a sanctuary seeker, you may be in touch with an organisation that is working in support of refugees and asylum seekers or others in trauma, which can arrange a trip to Hill House. The house is freely available for you. Local refugee support agencies and individuals are welcome to use the house for respite, for away days and for arranging activiites in the area for their members and service users. For those supporting groups in the refugee sector, anywhere in the country, you are welcome to use the house for self-catered stays of up to a week at subsidised cost. Contact Caroline to discuss how we can make any of these activities work for you. There is wheelchair access to the ground floor and to the main lawn. (Apart from day visits, the house is not suitable for families with toddlers.)

Each client receives a bespoke, hour-long styling consultation with a trained volunteer, to find a high-quality interview outfit that will fill her with confidence. This is free of charge and the clothes are hers to keep.
• Interview preparation (Coaching)- This is followed by a one-to-one 60-minute coaching session with an expert interview coach, where each client receives valuable interview preparation.
• Second dressing- We are proud that 63% of clients secure a job in a month. Once a woman gets the job, she is welcomed back for a Second Dressing and receives a capsule working wardrobe to last until her first pay cheque.

Social Adventures - Refugee Friendship Groups
Garden Needs is a service that helps people improve their gardens and outdoor spaces. They work with various groups, including individuals with mental health challenges, disabilities, and those facing social isolation. The service provides support to enhance well-being through gardening activities.
Once referred, participants can join sessions where they learn about gardening techniques, plant care, and garden design. The team also offers advice on maintaining gardens, creating spaces for relaxation, and growing food.
For example, participants might work on planting flowers, building raised beds for vegetables, or designing calming garden areas. These activities not only beautify spaces but also promote physical health and mental well-being. By engaging in gardening, individuals can connect with others, learn new skills, and experience the joy of watching their plants grow. Overall, Garden Needs aims to create a supportive community through the shared experience of gardening.
